Must See: ‘Dark Souls’ Re-Imagined As An Arcade Game

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:30 PM PST

Dark Souls Image

There's no denying that Dark Souls, the game developed by Japanese company From Software, is one of the hardest ever created. It can be viciously infuriating, yet the sense of accomplishment in conquering it makes it a must play for most who call themselves gamers, and not just those with an affinity for self-torment.

In an exceptional re-imagining of the game, someone has created a magazine ad for the arcade version of Dark Souls, complete with some screenshots of memorable moments/enemies from the game. You can check it out below. [...]

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Star Josh Hutcherson On What Audiences Will See In IMAX

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 06:00 PM PST

Catching Fire

The action sequences for The Hunger Games weren't necessarily the best mostly because of the shaky camera scenes and jarring transitions. Hopefully director Francis Lawrence can learn from those mistakes and create a more fluid action sequence that is easier on the eyes. Lawrence is currently overseeing production for the film and as it gets closer to wrapping up shooing, one of the film's stars, Josh Hutcherson, is speaking out about what we will see and how it will look on IMAX.

We've recently learned that some of the film's action sequences will be shot using IMAX cameras. The success of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and the final two films of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has set a trend for blockbuster films to use the technology in its rawest form. [...]

Zack Snyder’s ‘Man Of Steel’ May Acknowledge Existence of Justice League

Justice League

With WB setting their sights on releasing Justice League in the near future, it would be plausible to assume that Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is a part of the superhero ensemble. The director has gone from denying that his Superman is a part of the Justice League to responding with diverting answers.

But in a recent interview, Snyder has said something very interesting that may lead us to believe that we will be seeing something that will lead up to Justice League in Man of Steel. [...]

The Ninth and Latest ‘Hobbit’ Production Video Features A Lot Of Tired Technicians

The Hobbit

Having a huge event film in its post-production stage up until only a few days from its world premiere is not exactly unheard of in the motion picture industry, especially when it involves the completion of crucial visual effects and music. Such is the case with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is still being worked on as its theatrical opening looms largely with less than three weeks to go before it bows on 2D and 3D movie screens across the U.S.

To give us a modest taste of the massive amounts of work that go into making The Hobbit look and sound as epic and unforgettable as it needs to be director Peter Jackson is here with the ninth in a series of video production diaries.

You can watch the video here below [...]

Ghostbusters #14 continues the streak. It's the 14th awesome issue in a row with the SAME creative team! In today's comic world, that's a record. Not to mention, it's pretty damn awesome.

Erik Burnham was BORN to write this comic. Hey, Hollywood, THIS is the guy that you want to write Ghostbusters 3. There is no one who writes these characters better than him. He's got every character spot on. No exceptions. This issue has the Ghostbusters taking on the Ghost Smashers, and they find themselves hooking up with a VERY unexpected ally. He's got about three or four subplots going on at the same time, and none of them are confusing or muddled and they all get you excited for upcoming issues. THAT is some good comics writing, folks. Not to mention that the comic is full tilt fun from beginning to end [...]

Interview: ‘A History Of A Time To Come: The Story Of UK Thrash’ Documentarian Josh Callis-Smith

Josh Callis-Smith

With all the talk in the last few years of the 'Big 4' of thrash metal and their all-conquering tour, it might be easy to forget where it all began. The U.S. heavyweights of the genre have reigned almost uninterrupted for nearly 30 years. But it might not have been that way had it not been for a metal sub-genre created in the UK.

British director Josh Callis-Smith has spent the last few years speaking to everyone involved in the UK thrash scene, from pivotal musicians to young upstarts, collating them for his documentary, A History Of A Time To Come – The Story Of UK Thrash. As a member of the band Pitiful Reign at the turn of the century, he was perfectly placed for the 'second wave' of British thrash that we are seeing now.

I caught up with Josh to ask him about his film, the current UK thrash scene, and how British band Venom was pivotal to the entire genre.

Geeks of Doom: What was it about UK thrash that drew you to make a film about it?

Josh Callis-Smith: It's interesting really because I had a friend that used to roadie for Re-Animator and I remember when I first started getting into metal I went round [to his house] and I was like, Check this out - [Metallica album] Master of Puppets! He was like, You like Master of Puppets? Check this out! and he gave me Deny Reality [EP] by Re-Animator and Moshkinstein by Acid Reign. That got me interested in UK thrash bands; that's where it came from. [Some time later] I was trying to research these bands and not being able to find much about them made me think, Why don't I just go out and talk to them, actually find out what happened? That was the idea where the film came from [...]
